Latest Anime Recommendations

Dan Nexon reminds me that our master plan for world domination needs to include converting that other Daniel to the cause of anime. The rest of you should probably watch more anime, too. So...

First, if you've never watched any anime (Japanese animation), go buy or rent the first disc of Cowboy Bebop, a brilliant noir series about bounty hunters getting up to hijinks in a sci-fi universe. It'll blow away any ideas you have about cartoons being only for boredom and children.

Alternatively, if you actually want something childlike yet breathtaking, check out the Academy Award-winning and gorgeous Spirited Away, or the newly released movie of Howl's Moving Castle.

My own favorites in anime remain the three series that have given me perfect blends of action, setting, character and drama: The Vision of Escaflowne, Angelic Layer and Full Metal Alchemist. But new stuff I've enjoyed recently includes:

Scrapped Princess -- fantasy-yet-scifi about a girl destined to destroy the world; very good storytelling.
Samurai Champloo -- a stylish yet silly sendup of / homage to samurai action stories.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex -- cyberpunk future stories with a mix of action, intrigue, and, occasionally, neat little touches of philosophy.
Last Exile -- a one-of-a-kind science fiction saga about an airplane-flying message courier in a steam-age world at war.

If you like really pretty images of really nasty sex and violence, you should check out Speed Grapher, a Japanese mob-plus-voodoo story. And Den Beste, who got me to try the marvelous Angelic Layer, thinks the world of circus-girl series Kaleido Star. That's next on my list.

I have to say that, despite all its macho posturing, my wife and I are really enjoying Bleach right now. No "big themes," like in FMA, but some damn good plotting. Evangelion remains one of my favorites, but it definitely is not a "starter" show. Much easier to get something out of once you've seen a lot of anime. Same with FLCL - which really has to be seen in fansub.

As I mentioned on our blog, we're enjoying Moon Phase despite the wildly uneven quality of the artwork. Now if only Mahu would start subbing again or IY-4ever would catch up. GIS:SAC is coming up on our list, but my wife's never seen the original film and we have to wait until it arrives from netflix. We're currently watching old Lupin's and Serial Experiment Lain will probably get seen before SAC.

What hooked us in our latest kick, actually, was Inuyasha. An overly long soap opera? Sure. But some of the mini-arcs are quite good, and the characters are fun. I understand there are anime versions of Mermaid's Scar/Mermaid's Forest/etc., but the reviews for them tend to be lukewarm.I found the Mangas really powerful, disturbing stuff. There some of the few that I actually own.

Too many other shows to name. Couldn't get into Samurai Champloo.

Someday we'll end our anime kick will probably go the way of our Hong Kong action film kick (which lasted about two years), but until then.
